A Trip to Remember

On the 70th anniversary of his leaving the USS Midway, Good Shepherd Resident Clarence Allison traveled to San Diego with his son and daughter-in-law to visit the ship for a tour full of reminiscing.

The USS Midway was an aircraft carrier of the U.S. Navy, the lead ship of its class. Commissioned a week after the end of World War II, Midway was the largest ship in the world until 1955, as well as the first U.S. aircraft carrier too big to transit the Panama Canal. (

Mr. Allison was a Fireman First Class and is referred to as a “plank owner”, a distinction due to his service on the USS Midway during its initial shakedown cruise, or maiden voyage. “There are a lot of systems that have to work together and they have to be tested to be sure they are working properly,” said Mr. Allison.

The USS Midway was decommissioned in 1992 and is now on display as a museum in San Diego, CA. Mr. Allison’s other interests are genealogy, astronomy, and amateur radio.
